Testing Beyond Requirements

Testing Beyond Requirements

ABOUT ME:

As a tester, I am trained in the Context-Driven School. That means I focus on honing my skills and understanding the product as a solution provided to a customer. I came to testing in a non-traditional way. My background is in running businesses. I ran a restaurant and a spa (at the same time) before the financial crisis hit my home country of Iceland in 2008.

I am active in the testing community. Apart from attending conferences, I presented an experience report at the first Workshop on AI in Testing (WAIT 01).

As part of training my mind, I read philosophy and investigate cold case files.

I speak English, Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic.

For the past two years I have worked full-time for a medical device company named ThinkMD. My responsibilities at ThinkMD included:

  • Leading the testing team.
  • Planning and performing testing of diagnostic medical software.
  • Identifying opportunities for product improvement.
  • Preparing test documentation for regulatory filings (FDA).
  • Directing the efforts of supporting developers to implement automation strategy.
  • Designed a new Software Development Specification outline that effectively maps requirement documents to test cases.
  • Proposed a feature request for a health monitoring system and actively participated in the initial design sessions.
  • Collaborated cross-functionally with multiple teams focused on process improvement.
  • Worked closely with our developers to design and implement tools tailored to THINKMD specifications, enhancing our testing capabilities.

Prior to my time working for ThinkMD, I worked in Emergency Medical Services, Insurance and Roadside Assistance. My responsibilities included:

  • Routed calls to police, fire, and ambulance service to meet individual call needs.
  • Received public emergency and non-emergency calls and supervised response prioritization in order to effectively dispatch official units such as police, fire, and EMS while tracking data in real-time environments.
  • Relayed the latest information to first responders via electronic means, telephone calls, and radio responses.
  • Read system maps and caller information, and documented details in the system.
  • Optimized productivity to improve on-time emergency response.
  • Enhanced productivity by guaranteeing timely emergency response with no service delivery issues.
  • Facilitated communications between customers and field personnel to answer questions or resolve concerns.
  • Coordinated schedules for optimal coverage of the daily workload and adjusted quickly to changing demands.
  • Prepared a variety of different written communications, reports, and documents.
  • Resolved conflicts and negotiated mutually beneficial agreements between parties.
  • Applied customer feedback to develop process improvements and support long-term business needs.
  • Reduced process bottlenecks by training and coaching employees on practices, procedures, and performance strategies.
  • Onboarded new employees with training and new hire documentation.
  • Evaluated employees’ strengths and assigned tasks based upon experience and training.

ALEXANDERCARLSSON.COM is dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of Testing in real world scenarios. It is my firm belief that limiting the scope of testing solely to software overlooks its broader potential and significance.

The principles and methodologies employed in software testing are, in fact, universally applicable. Any subject, process, or system can be rigorously scrutinized using these techniques. In this polarized world with information being thrown at us from all angles, the need for effective testing has never been more critical.

With the help of world renowned testers I will delve into the history and methodology of Testing, we will explore:

  • The historical evolution of testing practices
  • Core methodologies that define effective testing
  • The application of the testing mindset beyond software, emphasizing critical thinking in various domains

Recommendations:

I have been working with Alex since he first came to me for training, about two years ago.
Based on his energy and eagerness to learn, I took him on as an intern, and then helped him get work as the sole tester for ThinkMD, which was one of my clients at the time.

We tested together, there, for a few months. Alex did well at ThinkMD, and after my formal contract ended, he continued to coordinate with me to build tools for him and to consult on difficult points of test strategy. Although I was not being paid for this work, Alex made it fun and educational for me to help him. ThinkMD has thus received benefits far beyond what they paid for, because of Alex.

Alex is a systems thinker who tends to go beyond what any reasonable person would expect when solving problems. He will use any and all resources he can find. I have even known him to cold-call university professors. As a former business owner with varied experiences, Alex is resilient and assertive. You can drop him into anything. He will find a way to succeed.

As Founder and President of THINKDMD, PBC., I enthusiastically provide my recommendation for

Alexander Carlsson for employment in your organization. Alex has been an invaluable asset to

THINKMD since his start and only grew in both his knowledge base and skills while working at

THINKMD.

He was the lead QA tester for our clinical decision support digital health platform, which was

a key and critical part of our Quality Management System for our technology. His work assured that our

digital clinical product was released as designed and of the highest quality. In addition, based on his

exposure to our platform during his work, we regularly met to hear his thoughts and suggestions on how

we can improve our UI/UX and our value proposition to our customers. These sessions demonstrated

Alex’s intellect, ability to assess novel challenges and develop meaningful recommendations that I and

our team respected and, in many cases, moved forward.

An example of the work Alex performed while at THINKMD includes, but is not limited to:

• Designing a new Software Development Specification outline that can effectively map

requirement documents to test cases.

• Proposed a Feature Request for a health monitoring system and actively participated in the initial design sessions.

• He collaborated cross-functionally with multiple teams working on process improvement.

• Alex worked closely with our developers to design and implement tools tailored to THINKMD

specifications, enhancing our testing capabilities. Alex’s process improvement analysis has been

essential in enhancing our operational efficiency.

Unfortunately. Alex’s departure occurred because of THINKMD restructuring as a part of an M&A we are

moving forward with and is not reflective of the quality of his work or value to THINKMD. I fully

recommend him and believe he will be a great asset to any organization lucky enough to recruit him.

Please reach out with any questions you may have.
